Health Benefits of Echinacea(and how to prepare).

Another plant in Gemsjardin

Echinacea is a wonderful herb that has been around for over 400 years as a natural remedy used by the Native Americans and adopted by the early settlers as a medicine. Members of the medical profession in early America relied heavily on echinacea, but it fell from favor with the advent of pharmaceutical medicine and antibiotics. Many physicians are rediscovering the benefits of echinacea.  It has many powerful healing qualities including immune support, helps with inflammation, pain, swelling, helps with colds, flu’s, gum disease, tonsillitis, herpes, yeast infections… and more.

How to prepare Echinacea:

Steep the flowers , stems and roots into a tea( this does not taste very good so I would recommend adding  1 drop of Peppermint Essential oil ).

The roots, flowers and stems are also dried and made into a tincture. To make a tincture for internal use, you need a  menstruum(a liquid used to dissolve the organic material). The menstruum can be alcohol, apple cider vinegar, or vegetable glycerine. A good rule of thumb for beginners is, “When in doubt, use drinking alcohol(such as vodka).” a pint jar and labels.

Place the dried roots, flowers and stems in the jar cover with the menstruum (usually 60% menstruum 40 % plant) put the lid on and label with the date.

Let stand for 4 to 6 weeks then use a cheesecloth, strain the liquid. TaDa you now have a tincture.

At the first sign of a cold or throughout a cold take take ½ to ¾ of a teaspoon of the tincture 3 to 4 times a day.

Health benefits of Lavatera

As I was reading Gemsjardin blog about the twenty favorite plants. I said to myself “hey! I have this plant also”. So I headed over to Natural Medicine Herbs and did a little search.

To my amazement Here is what I found:

Medicinal use of Mallow:

All parts of the plant are antiphlogistic, astringent, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, laxative, salve. The leaves and flowers can be eaten as part of the diet, or a tea can be made from the leaves, flowers or roots. The leaves and flowers are the main part used, their demulcent properties making them valuable as a poultice for bruise, inflammations, insect bites etc, or they can be taken internally in the treatment of respiratory system diseases and problems with the digestive tract. When combined with eucalyptus it makes a god remedy for coughs and other chest ailments. Mallow has similar properties, but is considered to be inferior to the marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis) and are seldom used internally. The plant is an excellent laxative for young children. The leaves can be used fresh whenever they are available or can be harvested in the spring and dried for later use. The flowers are harvested in the summer and can be dried for later use.

Edible parts of Mallow:

Leaves – raw or cooked. Mucilaginous with a mild pleasant flavour, they are nice in soups where they act as a thickener. The young leaves also make a very acceptable substitute for lettuce in a salad. Immature seed – raw. Used as a nibble, the seeds have a nice nutty flavour but are too fiddly for most people to want to gather in quantity. Flowers – raw. Added to salads or used as a garnish. A pleasant mild flavour, with a similar texture to the leaves, they make a pleasant and pretty addition to the salad bowl. The leaves are a tea substitute.

Other uses of the herb:

Cream, yellow and green dyes can be obtained from the plant and the seed heads. A tincture of the flowers forms a very delicate test for alkalis. The leaves are used to relieve insect bites and stings. A fibre obtained from the stems is useful for cordage, textiles and paper making.

Propagation of Mallow:

Seed – sow early spring in situ. Germination should take place within 2 weeks.

I firmly believe that every plant has medicinal value. I am learning more every day .
